Mt. Takao Hiking

A mountain walk on Mt. Takao (606 m), the peak rising behind Tanabe. The usual route starts at Kizetsukyo Gorge (奇絶峡), and from the top you get wide views over Tanabe’s townscape and the surrounding mountains.
Highlights
- Fudo Falls (不動の滝)
- Magaibutsu Sanzon Daiishibutsu (摩崖三尊大石仏) – a huge Buddhist trio carved into a rock face, 16 m high and 22 m wide
- The sutra mound memorial tower at the summit
- Takaoyama Sky Park and the east viewpoint

Unlike the Kumano Kodo, this is a quiet trail with almost no foreign hikers – a local’s walk. Just note that there are no English signs.
