Probably the best experience you could ever get on your Kumano Kodo trekking journey. My sister and I booked a stay at Guesthouse Komorian, expecting a regular, decent place to sleep for the night. Instead, we got a 5-star hotel experience with a ride to the place, traditional dinner and breakfast (the hot pot was to die for), and the sweetest & kindest hostess one could ever hope for. I cannot emphasize enough how magical this stay has been. The house is hidden away in a charming yet little-known village, surrounded by trees and greenery-- the view was pittoresque to say the least, and sitting in the living room at dusk was an experience I won't soon forget. The beds were exceptionally comfortable and allowed for a restful night. Opening the door to the bath room, you'll find a luxurious space with a shower and a wooden bathtub (and lord knows we needed that much for the days of walking that were to come). Honestly, the hardest part was convincing myself I needed to get out of that bathtub eventually... My only regret is that we only stayed a single night. I wish I could've spent a week enjoying the view, the comfort, and the amenities this place had to offer. Have you ever seen a guest house with almost 40 reviews, each a five-star rating? Komorian, and especially its hostess, deserve every single one of those stars. We hope to come back to this place at least one more time, in the future. Thank you so much, Miko-san. You've made our journey truly unforgettable, and we are forever grateful.

Stayed 3 nights and didn't want to leave! We were depressed for two days after leaving! Most beautiful place I've ever stayed, best food I ever had, and the owner is pretty amazing.

If I could give more than 5 stars to Miko-San for her incredible attentiveness, spectacular food and beautiful guesthouse I would in a heartbeat. Komorian’s dinner and breakfast were outstanding serving us well on the Kumano Kodo trail. Miko-San picked us up from Takahara for a quick trip to her beautiful guesthouse - situated beside a gorgeous ravine - perfect for a post hike dip! I cannot recommend Miko-San’s place more highly and wish her continued success. If I walk the trail again I will be back. Arigato Gozaimasu Miko-San.

My husband and I walked the Kumano Kodo in early February and stayed with Miko for our first 3 nights. Honestly, it was the best decision of the trip and set us up for an incredible experience of the whole walk. It gave us a single base for the first 3 sections of the Kumano and that allowed us to relax into the experience rather than worrying about finding new places to stay and eat every night after long days of hiking. On top of that, Miko has walked the Kumano herself and knows a lot about the area so we could ask questions about what we'd seen and get her insights driving to and from the start of the trail each day. The house itself is really peaceful and great for resting and the woodwork throughout is stunning (not to mention the cedar tub). She gets all the details right including luxurious linens and robes to lounge in and an eclectic book and games collection. The house feels like a work of art but not in a "you can't touch anything" kind of way :) And then, there's the food! Miko is an incredible cook and the meals we enjoyed at Komorian were some of our favourites of the whole trip, always beautifully prepared with local ingredients and presented with stories about where everything on the plate comes from, including what the chickens and pigs eat and how their diet contributes to to what you taste. The food and the house would be enough to earn 5 stars. But Miko's energy is another whole 5-star experience in that of itself. We had so many great conversations on the winding back roads about Shintoism, Murakami, local citrus, foxes, the history of the cedar forests, how to charm the locals, caring for aging parents, and how to decide where to live. In short, by the end of our 3 days, we felt like we were staying with a friend and we definitely hope to return. For travellers considering when to walk the Kumano: We were a little hesitant about hiking in winter but I'm so happy we did. In fact, I now think it's the best time to go. It was stunning and the temperatures were pretty moderate, except the last day on the highest peak which was pretty cold. We had the trail practically to ourselves and the deep silence of the cedar forests and the stunning clarity of the winter light is something I will always remember.

Miko has created a little piece of heaven near the start of the Kumano Kodo trail. The house and rooms are beautiful, and the location in the valley with the river running below the house is magical - it feels a bit like stepping back in time. And that’s all before we get to the incredible feast that Miko pulled together. Thank you for having us, and for picking us up and dropping us off - we had a fantastic time.

Miko-san is the sweetest, she speaks very good English. The house is absolutely beautiful with a lot of attention to details. Our room, japanese style, was spacious and beautiful. You can see the river from the common area and enjoy kotatsu. The diner was excellent, there was a lot of food! We enjoyed the traditional wood bath. As it not exactly on the kumano kodo but a 10mn drive, Miko-san came to pick us up at Takahara rest area. We recommend 100%. Thank you Miko-san for this experience!

The Komorian is a hidden gem and one of the best parts of our Kumano Kodo walk. Beautiful guesthouse in a serene setting. Miko San was an amazing host and her cooking is Michelin worthy! Thank you so much Miko!

This was the nicest place we stayed in along the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi trail by far! It was even better than the Ryokan we stayed in later at Yunomine Onsen area. The house itself was absolutely gorgeous and spotless. It used to be owned by a geisha. It was really warm and cosy inside the house. The wooden bathtub was also lovely for a hot bath too. The host Miko was extremely lovely and helpful. She was very easy to communicate with over WhatsApp and spoke excellent English. She liaised with us to organise to meet us to pick up our luggage from outside the bus stop at Takijiri, and then later met up with us to pick us up from the Takahara rest stop after our 2hr hike. It was all streamlined and happened without a hitch. She was also kind enough to help us with parts of our itinerary that we hadn’t ironed out properly and we really appreciated her advice. Dinner, breakfast and lunch were delicious. Dinner had a wide range of small Japanese dishes and what I think is called Shabu Shabu. Breakfast was eggs within toast, yoghurt and some fruit. I don’t think she is doing lunch boxes anymore this year but it was very delicious. Instead you can buy lunch on your second day at the co-op along the way. Overall we would strongly recommend staying at this place! Thank you Miko for hosting us

I rarely if ever send online reviews but on this occasion I have made an exception for an exceptionally first rate experience. My wife and I stayed with Miko (host) at Komorian for three nights while walking the Kumano Kodo. The food was great, the location was wonderful and Miko was delightful. Miko worked very hard to make our stay perfect. I could go on and on but if you are interested in walking the Kumano Kodo this is a superb place to stay, My wife and I highly recommend staying at Komorian.
